Hindi Keyword Research — The Complete 2026 Guide

Hindi is the third-largest internet language by users (~600M Indians online), yet 90% of SEO tools have terrible Hindi data. Here's how to do real keyword research for Hindi content, plus India's lesser-known regional language opportunities.

Hindi is the world's third-largest internet language— roughly 600 million Indians use Hindi-Roman or Devanagari online daily. Yet most SEO tools (Ahrefs, Semrush, even Ubersuggest) treat Hindi as an afterthought. Volume data is often wrong, related-keyword suggestions miss obvious queries, and Devanagari script support is patchy.

After running hundreds of audits on Indian sites across e-commerce, local services, news, and SaaS, we've learned the patterns that work for Hindi keyword research, the tools that actually have data, and the mistakes that cost ranking.

Why Hindi SEO is harder than English

Three reasons most tools struggle with Hindi:

  1. Script ambiguity— "best home loan" in Hindi can be written as "बेस्ट होम लोन" (Devanagari), "best home loan in hindi" (English query, Hindi intent), or "सबसे अच्छा होम लोन" (true Hindi). Each has different volume.
  2. Code-switching— Hindi-Roman ("Hinglish") is the most common typing format on mobile. "best home loan kaun sa hai" gets more searches than the pure Hindi version.
  3. Tools underweight regional— Google's Keyword Planner often shows "low volume" for Hindi terms that actually have 10K+ monthly searches, because their classifier missed the intent.

Best tools for Hindi keyword research

1. Google Trends (best free option)

Filter by India geo and language: Hindi. Trends shows you relative interest accurately even when other tools have wrong volumes. Use it for direction, not exact numbers.

2. Google Search Console (after you have content)

GSC shows the actual Hindi queries that brought users to your site — including the long-tail Hindi-Roman variations you'd never think to target. This is gold.

3. Google Suggest (autocomplete)

Type your seed term in Devanagari or Hindi-Roman in google.co.in/?hl=hi and capture all autocomplete suggestions. These are real searches.

4. SEOSpectator (coming Wave 2)

Our free SEO audit tool currently audits Hindi content for proper hreflang, language tags, and Hindi-optimized title/meta tags. Dedicated Hindi keyword research tool ships in Wave 2 (Q3 2026) with real Devanagari search volume data.

Hindi keyword strategy that works

Target three keyword formats per topic

For every important topic, create content (or sections within content) targeting:

  1. Hindi-Roman— "home loan eligibility kaise check karen"
  2. English-with-Hindi-intent— "home loan eligibility in hindi"
  3. Pure Hindi (Devanagari)— "होम लोन की पात्रता कैसे जांचें"

Use proper hreflang

If you have both English and Hindi versions of a page, declare them with hreflang:

<link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-IN" href="https://example.com/home-loan" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="hi-IN" href="https://example.com/hi/home-loan" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://example.com/home-loan" />

Run hreflang audit on existing pages

Run a free SEO audit on your Hindi page — SEOSpectator's India-Native Lens specifically checks for Hindi hreflang, content language detection, and India CDN presence (so your Hindi pages load fast for Indian users).

Beyond Hindi: regional opportunities

Many Indian regional languages have massive untapped SEO opportunity — almost zero serious competition:

LanguageInternet users (M)Competition level
Hindi600MHigh
Tamil80MMedium
Bengali100MLow
Telugu90MLow
Marathi75MVery low
Gujarati55MVery low

Marathi and Gujarati especially are open goals — high user base, almost no quality content competing.
